Common riding

A common riding, or riding of the marches, is an annual ceremony performed in certain Scottish burghs, particularly in the Borders. In the ceremony, a band of riders makes a circuit of the marches or boundaries of the town, ensuring that no neighbouring landowners are encroaching on the burghers' territory.
