Silur je prvohorní útvar v nadloží ordoviku a v podloží devonu. Byl vymezen v roce 1835 Roderickem Murchisonem jako sled mezi kambriem a devonským old redem a nazván podle Silurů, starověkého kmene, který v dané oblasti jižního Walesu sídlil.
