Onkogen je gen, který způsobuje rakovinné bujení. Protoonkogen je normální správně fungující buněčný gen, který je zapojen do buněčného růstu, proliferace nebo apoptózy. Následkem poškození, určité mutace či nesprávné exprese protoonkogenu z něj může vzniknout onkogen.
