In Slavic languages, iotation (/joʊˈteɪʃən/ yoh-TAY-shən or /ˌaɪ.oʊˈteɪʃən/ EYE-oh-TAY-shən) is a form of palatalization that occurs when a consonant comes into contact with the palatal approximant /j/ from the succeeding phoneme.
