Původně byl napsán v Bellových Laboratořích (Unix System Laboratories, USL) firmy AT&T a zveřejněn poprvé v roce 1983. System V je přímým pokračováním systému napsaného v roce 1969 Dennisem Ritchiem a Kenem Thompsonem.
