V pozdní anglosaské Anglii byl thén, latinsky minister (služebník), aristokratem, který se v laické společnosti řadil na třetí úroveň, pod krále a ealdormany. Musel být významným vlastníkem půdy. Thénství označuje držbu, na základě které thén vlastnil pozemky, a také titul. Přibližným moderním ekvivalentem by mohl být titul baron.
