Tyto bytosti se v mytologických příbězích vyskytují i v podobě ženy, kterým se říká rákšasí. Většinou obývají různé džungle a lesy, pohřebiště, skály či jiná temná místa. Poprvé jsou zmiňování v Atharvavédě.
