Právní stát (německy Rechtsstaat, francouzsky état de droit) je takový stát, kdy výkon státní moci je omezen a podřízen zákonu. Vztah mezi občanem a státem je vymezen pomocí práva. Podle ideje právního státu by stát měl sloužit občanovi, nikoli naopak.
