Mezenchym je původní výplň mezi zárodečnými listy ektodermem a entodermem. Má řídkou houbovitou stavbu – velké mezibuněčné prostory. Při diferenciaci z mezenchymu vycestovávají buňky pozdějšího mezodermu. Ty vytvářejí základní hmotu, která plní opornou, trofickou (vyživovací) a výplňovou funkci.
