Kayané jsou podskupinou Karenů – tibetsko-barmskou etnickou menšinou. Podle kayanských vyprávění pocházejí z jižního Mongolska, odkud putovali přes Čínu, Tibet a Indii až do Barmy, kde se usadili v provincii Kaya. Dnes se nachází v Kayanském státě a v jižní části Šanského státu.
