Isatin je organická sloučenina, derivát indolu. Poprvé ji připravili roku 1840 Otto Linné Erdmann a Auguste Laurent oxidací indiga kyselinou dusičnou a kyselinou chromovou. Isatin se nachází v mnoha rostlinách, jako jsou boryt barvířský, Calanthe discolor a Couroupita guianensis.
