Termín vznikl ke konci 19. století v severozápadní části Spojených států amerických pro dělníky bez domova putující krajem. Společensky pod nimi stáli trampové, kteří v kontrastu s hoboes pracovali jen z donucení, a ještě níže „bums“, kteří nepracovali vůbec.
