Diftongizace

Diftongizace je změna jedné samohlásky na dvojhlásku (=diftong). Dochází k ní jednak diachronicky ve vývoji jazyka, jednak synchronicky při změnách gramatického tvaru (např. ve španělštině contar – cuento). Opakem je monoftongizace, kdy se dvojhláska mění na jednu samohlásku.
