Canis je rod psovitých šelem. Do rodu patří i dingo pralesní, zvaný též novoguinejský zpívající pes, jenže jeho klasifikace je stále nejasná. V latině slovo 'canis' znamená 'pes', v českém zoologickém názvosloví má více ekvivalentů (viz níže).
