Sovětské bojové vozidlo pěchoty BMP-2 bylo vyvinuto v sedmdesátých letech 20. století na podkladě zkušeností se strojem BMP-1. První ověřovací série se začaly vyrábět od roku 1976. Zavedeno do výzbroje bylo o 4 roky později a sériová výroba v SSSR/Rusku, trvala až do roku 2008.
