Bakelit je fenolformaldehydový polykondenzát (pryskyřice), který v roce 1907 jako první připravil belgický chemik Leo Hendrik Baekeland (1863–1944). Bakelite™ a Bakelit™ jsou ochranné značky německé společnosti Bakelite AG, ale samotný název „bakelit“ rychle zdomácněl v hovorové řeči jako apelativní označení víceméně všech umělých hmot.
